You got the budget and the go-ahead to deliver a library of eLearning that you were confident was going to be the first step towards your dream 'pull' learning culture.
However, despite the hard work you put in, you’re not achieving everything you set out to—and you’re not seeing the ROI you’d wanted.
This could be down to communication, or the way you’ve been marketing your work—have you gained enough buy-in? —but part of the issue may lie with the learners themselves.
Look at how your people are engaging with the learning, and put yourself in their shoes. There are several reasons why they might be put off, and we’ve picked seven of the most common to look at.
1. They already have a negative impression of eLearning
Your learners may have had negative experiences in the past which could make them reluctant to engage with new solutions.
When you first introduce them to your imaginative, engaging eLearning, you’ll need to use your influencing skills and techniques to build excitement and curiosity.
Then you can begin delivering the content that will change eLearning’s reputation.
2. ‘Push’ learning has turned them into passive participants
Some experiences with eLearning often start when an email reminder from the training manager drops into an inbox with a link to a data protection course.
This is made up of some text, which the learner will read, and some multiple choice questions, which they answer. Afterwards, they go straight back to work.
If this has been the case, it’s likely they won’t know how to ‘pull’ learning.

3. Your eLearning isn’t exciting enough
Sometimes we see reluctance because, historically, a lot of eLearning has been boring!
We know eLearning can be so much more than quiz modules and big chunks of reading—it can be an engaging, modern digital learning experience that maximises its message and impact. But do your learners know that?
If your eLearning is a bit flat, spice it up with some interactive elements, such as video or gamification. Take inspiration from other digital learning delivery methods to work interactivity into your eLearning.
4. Bad design is turning them off
Use graphic design best practice and design principles to make sure clunky design doesn’t turn your learners off before they even make it to the content.
If it’s not visually enticing, it’s likely that you people will be disengaged right from the start.
5. The content is full of mistakes
Spend time checking and testing your eLearning before you launch it, as mistakes can damage buy-in. Nobody wants to spend hours reading content that’s full of errors.
6. Your eLearning is inaccessible
Just-in-time learning is all about making learning accessible to your people as and when they need it. If they have to wait, they may never be as engaged again as they were in that moment!
Remove all roadblocks. Make sure your learners can always pick up where they left off, navigate freely, and carry their progress over to different devices.
7. They don’t have the technology skills needed to engage
One of your problems may be a skills gap. Do your people have the technology skills to use your learning solutions correctly?
You may need to start with some foundational training before introducing some learners to your eLearning. Some need an introduction (or refresher) to the basic digital skillset that a lot of us take for granted.
Once you’ve got all of this in order, sit back and watch engagement improving!
Your LMS or learning delivery platform, if you have one, is a secret weapon for engagement. When you’re delivering eLearning through a platform, you can track how any changes you have made are engaging your learners.
Looking at that data and being agile enough in your learning to adapt is a key skill for L&D.
If you have the skills in place to create amazing eLearning, make sure you’re also using all the tools at your disposal to measure and adjust as necessary. Use that information and that feedback to your advantage! It's not enough to craft a solution and then just leave it—no matter how good it is, or how well-designed and usable.
