Martin Blazey Balancing design and content during the eLearning experience

When designing eLearning solutions, how do you create a programme that is balanced – allowing the learning to flow, the design to be great and the benefit to business maximised?

Here are my top five points to consider right from the start of design.

  1. Create a visual journey for the user for on each screen, guide them through the content.

  2. Keep page templates consistent across the course/modules of the same type, subject or client where possible.

  3. Use a sympathetic colour pallet throughout, but be aware of colour safe palettes for colour blind users, using selections with a strong contrast.
    We believes in good looking and accessible content for all your workforce, making sure everyone can participate. eLearning should be an inclusive and beneficial experience so that it can benefit your business fully.

  4. Provide quality images and video for your eLearning.
    Do not cut corners on quality because your learner is going to notice this and instantly be distracted and underwhelmed. There is little point in creating well written content and not take care of the key visual elements, and vice-versa. Users are visually savvy (even if they don’t know it), and will feel like they are not being taken seriously if video or image content looks and sounds poor, is wrongly positioned or not appropriate to the content.

    We develop content with the learner in mind. We think learners should be given high quality products that aid engagement and a positive and rewarding experience, so whenever they think of eLearning they don't think of it as a chore or unpleasant task.

  5. eLearning tools do not make eLearning.
    You may have the tools to create eLearning but before you start pasting in text and creating videos it's important to think about the content, the delivery, the pacing, and when, how and where to test for learning.

    The learning content should always drive the design, otherwise it will be an unsuccessful and demotivating eLearning course for the user and not yield the results you want. We understands that selecting the correct tools to create eLearning is important and believe creating truly great eLearning requires the content to be at the centre of the learning experience through the use of sympathetic design. Delivering content that meets the needs and expectations of your diverse workforce calls for the implementation of a thoughtful and structured approach.
