REAL STORY - SENIOR ACCOUNT MANAGER

"After several years’ experience both Client and Agency side, I joined Bray Leino as a Senior Account Manager in October 2012. During my interview, it was said that Bray Leino offered a structured development programme and a range of training opportunities that would enable me to further my career as an account handler. Naturally, I was sceptical, as this is something you will find promised in most interviews but often not delivered on.

"My scepticism was soon dispelled when I was introduced to our online learning portal ‘Greenhouse’, which offers a whole host of useful resources. One of the more appealing areas of Greenhouse was the Academy, which offers lists of all of the training courses on offer to you as a Bray Leino employee. Now, in your first week, you naturally have every intention of signing up for all additional learning and development on offer to you; but as expected, work piles up and this falls down the priority list. However, six months into my time at Bray Leino I was promoted to Account Director, where I was responsible for managing a team of three. Colleagues of mine had returned from the Leadership Programme with positive reviews, so my Manager and I agreed that it would be timely for me to attend the course to improve my skills as a Manager."

Perfect Balance Between Theory and Practical

The leadership course was inspiring and thought provoking on a number of levels. The two day modules struck a perfect balance between theory and practical exercises. One of the key learnings for me was understanding my team’s drivers and what motivates those individuals. This has really helped to build stronger relationships internally, both within my team and elsewhere in the agency. We were given a range of practical tools and examples of how to apply these in the workplace. I personally found tools to help manage conflict and difficult conversations, especially helpful both with Clients and team members. Other practical guidance around how to set measurable objectives has enabled me to help with my team’s development and career progression. This, I believe, has resulted in a higher performing and more motivated team.

Robbie Lightfoot, who runs the leadership course, mentioned at the start of the programme that we would not only be furnished with helpful tools and techniques to take away, but a lot of the theory would validate what we are already putting into practice as Managers. This was absolutely true, and I walked away with the confidence and encouragement I need to develop in my role as a Manager.
