/Nigel Walpole Top tips for leaders – part four

This is the fourth blog in my series listing the top 50 issues a leader has to consider (you can view the first, second and third ones here). Being a leader is a complex role. It’s about setting an example, determining a strategy, taking risks and keeping to your values. But it’s also about talent management, creating opportunities and making decisions. And some say it’s about being influential and being influenced.

These are not necessarily in any area of priority but are based on some of the feedback we get from leaders attending our Management Development Programme training courses. Of course much of the complexity comes from the subtlety required from those in a leadership role. I am sure this will provoke debate - things you’ll want to add, adjust or take away. Do let me know your views and we’ll compile a complete list and upload it to our website.

  1. Be open to new ideas
    Good leaders know they are not the only one with ideas.

  2. Treat staff as individuals
    Generally, leaders need to understand individual needs and strengths and weaknesses. Yes, create a supportive team culture but recognise individual talents.

  3. Encourage and reward co-operation
    Leaders need to get people to work together well. By all means set individual objectives, but competition needs be healthy and must not be destructive.

  4. Develop team guidelines
    Leaders need to set some rules for team working, but let the team build on these and develop a framework of co-operation.

  5. Change their role
    Good leaders are prepared to pass on the ‘baton of leadership’ to others when appropriate.

  6. Listen
    This is a vital skill for all good leaders.

  7. Involve people
    Good leaders know they are not the only ones with good ideas.

  8. Create opportunities for group participation
    Good leaders will get the group together often.

  9. Analyse data
    Good leaders use all information available to base decisions on.

  10. Follow company guidelines
    Good leaders know they represent the organisation.
